Just a fuckwit screaming into the void about life’s greatest distraction
The familiar wit that we know and the dark social commentary you’d come to expect from Bo Burnham but this special really indulges in the darkness more than ever before.
After the intermission this special stays pretty firmly in the territory of an existential nightmare and less of a comedy. I don’t think that’s a bad thing either, the first time I finished the special I immediately went to watch it again.
I’d missed seeing Bo Burnham’s comedy and this is certainly a return to form but not quite what I’d anticipated either.
A tonal mess but has a few shining moments. This needed a good 30mins shaved off its runtime and emma stone is woefully miscast. Kept finding myself comparing some of the scenes to the devil wears prada and then realised at the credits that the writer of that film had been brought in to do this one and frankly I feel betrayed by Aline Brosh McKenna.
