    Shirkers

    ★★★★

A very specific and odd story but one that feels very universal - due to the themes of lack of ownership, unfair treatment & nostalgia in an ever changing world. Also found the more self-aware parts really interesting where Sandi and Jasmine discussed their friendship/ different perceptions on how filming for Shirkers actually went. Very bittersweet.

This film feels like it’s four hours long!! Which seems to be an obvious stylistic choice (and it’s effective in what it’s trying to convey)....but it still feels like it’s four hours long.

Adored how it was shot, the acting, and the entire atmosphere/ethos of the film but it wasn’t always the most enjoyable to watch. Which is fine! Good films aren’t always meant to be ‘enjoyable’ but perhaps that’s why I couldn’t rate if the full 5 lol.

The safdie brothers saw the type of energy given off by the chaotic Instagram filters everyone used to use in 2012 and said that’s it, that it was we want to be, that is our aesthetic

Wasn’t 100% convinced by the first half hour or so but ended up really enjoying this film. Not quite what I expected but definitely a film that only someone like Taika Waititi could pull off.

    Won't You Be My Neighbor?

A very sweet & emotional documentary. Children are so strongly in-tune with what they’re feeling yet have no idea how to grapple with or process such feelings - how wonderful for this man to come along and provide support and comfort to so many children across America. Children’s emotions are never taken seriously and it was (and still is) incredibly revolutionary for Mr Rogers to come along and validate such emotions with such care and empathy. What a hero.

There’s a lot of technical aspects of this film that I didn’t really enjoy. The comments that it’s shot like The Office hit the nail on the head and generally I feel like the shakey camera movements feel misplaced and take away from some of the spectacular performances displayed within this film. I also didn’t enjoy a lot of the jarring audio choices.

However, I loved the story and found it a really fascinating look at faith and corruption within…

Ms Greta Gerwig knows how to leave me sat crying in the cinema 😰

Amy was by far my favourite character and definitely one of the girls that resonated with me the most. Florence Pugh stole the show by taking a character that could have easily been a hateable brat and turned her into a fleshed-out, complex and understandably flawed individual with good intentions.

I loved all the March sisters and thought they were all written with care and obvious…

It’s no secret that modern technology is not meant to last the test of time. Apple and Samsung have both been fined for deliberately slowing down their devices after two years and everyone knows that whatever electronic device you bought five years ago won’t be able to compete with what’s available right now. So, with such a high-speed conveyor belt of technology flowing through our culture – what happens to the devices that we will inevitably throw away?

Subtle, sad yet somewhat sweet. I love how there’s so many minute details that the film nods back to - it really threads the whole story together in such a lovely manner. Adam Driver is amazing.

    ....what was it even about.

Idm films with minimal story but there was little depth, character development or anything else to back this film up. It was messy, unfocused and rather shallow. The dialogue wasn’t even that good.

Also....that scene between sunny suljic & alexa demie is FUCKED & showcases some pretty immoral filmmaking tbh.
