this is my only reference for what it's like to be a poor teenage black girl in france, but it feels very accurate. i wish the recruitment into the bande de filles involved a few more steps and she was a little less mopey, but overall girlhood is a thoughtful look into another world. céline sciamma knows how to do effortlessly real moments. i was never too high or low on anything. a nice, light cinematic snack.
