Soundtrack Spotlight: Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Mix Vol. 1

With the huge success of Guardians of the Galaxy, both as a movie and as a soundtrack, Marvel tried to keep fan excitement (and spending) high while waiting for the second Guardians film. In 2015 that manifested in a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series on Disney XD, as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy Cosmic Mix Vol. 1.  Perhaps Disney execs hoped shoppers would confuse the Awesome Mix and the Cosmic Mix, with similar cover art and choice of 70s and early 80s hits, all of which were in the animated series’ first season.

Of course, Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling” leads off this copycat disc, which works as a decent compilation album with hits from Queen (“Don’t Stop Me Now”), Thin Lizzy (“The Boys are Back in Town”), and Three Dog Night (“Joy to the World”). Still, the disc lacks the thematic cohesion of Guardians movie director James Gunn’s two hand-picked soundtracks.

Gunn came out on Twitter to clarify he had no involvement in the Cosmic Mix, the songs were not his picks. And without a big movie behind it, the soundtrack has lived in relative obscurity, with no Cosmic Mix Vols. 2 and 3 to accompany the cartoon’s other two seasons.

Yet Gunn has still picked more Awesome Mixes... stay tuned for next week.
