k.a. abbas revisits the nature/nurture hypocrisies from his famous awaara script with that movie's star cast of raj kapoor (very subdued) and nargis (in a difficult double role). abbas lacks the formal brilliance and seemingly reflexive thematic attack of raj kapoor (rk's movies tend to explode nearly every idea they come into contact with) but edges closer and closer towards a melodrama heart of darkness, spurred on by the two increasingly delirious nargis roles. never forget that at its best the dual role tradition in indian film is a conduit for very strange and unsettling effects.
