Cochin Express ★★★½

is there a name for this genre (or sensibility?) in indian movies? the crime thriller that takes visual inspiration and narrative inspiration from noir but in a way very far removed from noir's more troubling emotional impulses (shakti samanta's ek raaz and howarh bridge vs. guru dutt's baazi or s. balachander's andha naal for example).

beautiful plot machine for most of its runtime, dead bodies on trains and femme fatales in railway compartments and hotel rooms waiting for murderers to show up. doesn't descend into slapstick so much as accept it as the natural end point of this kind of thriller logic; a major fight scene involves combatants being covered in gasoline and set on fire and as wonderful spectacle rather than burning flesh/murder.
