Pranchiyettan & The Saint ★★★½

ranjith can be a very frustrating writer/director - in his most interesting and ambitious work (i would say indian rupee and paleri manikyam: pathirakolapathakathinte katha) he kind of lacks the precision needed to pull of his ideas. but this film, an alternately sentimental and harsh comedy anchored by a brilliant mammootty performance as an embittered millionaire bachelor, finds a perfect balance; every outpouring of emotion is countered by an obsessive fascination with exact amounts of transactional relationships, precise to the dollar spent.

also beautiful as just a language comedy. and how many romantic comedies use "interior designer" as default job for female lead, and how few use that character's actual talent at interior design as a plot point?
