Spyder ★½

what little feeling murugadoss once had for masala filmmaking is here totally undone by his inability to scale his typically mid-budget productions to shankar size or to deal with the aloof vanity of star mahesh babu. only two sequences, a shankar flashback to the villain's childhood as a murderous child and a fist fight between sj suryah and mahesh in a collapsing hospital (some real anime bullshit, in a good way), suggest this could have been anything other than a fiasco. tempting to think of this as a film cobbled together through budget failings but some of the more perfectly realized sequences, like the requiting the women scenes, are bad in such condescending ways that suggest there would always be something rotten at the center of this.

and this is not to even touch on murugadoss view of mahesh as illegal wiretapper as hero...
