Watching the series, had to rewatch. Left feeling essentially the same way: simultaneously overwritten and underwritten (problems the show does/doesn’t solve), tonally bonkers, and 100 years too long. Benefits grandly through the retrospective lens of the “erotic thriller”… it’s honestly so crazy that it was a six-time Oscar nominee. 3 at best! Really insane. Glenn is good, and no doubt Adrian has the eye.
Shattered Mind 1996
Entertaining and – despite its best efforts – extremely unserious. Can’t decide if Heather Locklear is legitimately good or so bad that she circles back to being good. Either way, she comes crashing into every scene like a goddamn wrecking ball and it kind of rules. I love when she Hulks out on the fence. The direction and editing, especially in the first half hour, is genuinely clever. I liked it!
In the Dark 2000
Leans into the medium (and tedium) in a way that’s particularly unnerving, kind of like you’re watching something you shouldn’t be. Bummer this director didn’t do more, this is one of most well-constructed and effective low budget horror movies I’ve ever seen.
Not good, but not bad. Kind of like watching a de Palma through a glass of water, every one of his quirks are there, but it’s also pretty incomprehensible. Complete with not-quite-but-close-enough Nic Cage (but with the voice of David Thewlis?) and Melanie Griffith lookalikes. The music in this is bananas. Loved the hazy phone fantasies with the 90’s babes. Matthew is a little freak!
