I started to re-watch The Phantom of the Opera (1925) on DVD, the quality is awful. So, I found the Blu-ray version on YouTube and it looked awesome.

The Phantom Of The Opera (1925) is iconic for Lon Chaney's make-up as Erik.

I found this interesting. According to IMDB: Not a single photograph of Lon Chaney as The Phantom was published in a newspaper or magazine or seen anywhere before the film opened in theaters. Universal Pictures wanted The Phantom's face to be a complete surprise when his mask was ripped off.

Universal were doing things right, even as early as 1925. By 1960, when Hitchcock insisted that no one would be allowed in the theatre once his film Psycho (1960) started, Universal like "we got you, boo."
