23 Paces to Baker Street ★★★

Van Johnson, a playwright, is living in London during the production of his new play. Johnson, recently blinded, is embittered and harshly rejects the loving advances of his former fiancee, Vera Miles.

Drinking alone in a local pub, Johnson overhears a conversation that he interprets as a plot to kidnap a child. The police refuse to follow up on Johnson’s information. With the assistance of Miles and his attendant (Cecil Parker), Johnson carries out his own investigation.

At the conclusion, Johnson exposes the plotters who are arrested. His activities in investigating and exposing the crime have reinvigorated Johnson who happily plans a future with Miles.

Nicely plotted, suspenseful, and engrossing mystery with an unusual detective.
