The story of 1860s music hall entertainer George Leybourne (Tommy Trinder) and his rivalry with Vance the Great (Stanley Holloway) forms the basis of the plot. The singer/comedians attempt to outdo each other with competing comic songs, including the title song. Leybourne’s success with “Champagne Charlie” resulted in the song’s title becoming his nickname.
Trinder was a popular entertainer in England on the stage, on radio, and on film from the late 30s into the 60s. His film career waned after WWII. Stanley Holloway had a highly successful stage and film career as actor and singer. His performance in the stage (1956-1962) and film (1964) versions of My Fair Lady brought him international fame.
