The “driftwood” is nine year old Natalie Wood whose only relative, great grandfather H. B. Warner, dies in their isolated home. Dean Jagger finds Natalie and her dog alone on the road to town. Jagger, the only doctor in the small western town, takes in orphaned Natalie. Cute, precocious Natalie brings new perspectives into the lives of Jagger, his girlfriend Ruth Warrick, his friend and mentor Walter Brennan, and Warrick’s unmarried, sassy aunt, Charlotte Greenwood.
A family film, sugary but likable and well acted. Natalie Wood, an excellent young actor, was one of the few child actors who had a notable adult career.
