A story of the British navy during WWII centers on the lives (at sea and at home) of crew members of a British destroyer, HMS Torrin, from the building of the ship and assembly of the crew to its sinking by German war planes and the dispersal of the crew.
England had been at war for several years, and the outcome was still in doubt when this film was released. Noel Coward wrote, produced, directed (with David Lean), and starred in this sober, morale-boosting production. Along with Coward, the cast includes many notable post-war British actors, including John Mills, Michael Wilding, Richard Attenborough, Bernard Miles, James Donald, and Celia Johnson.
