Kurosawa in color is gorgeous. The scale of this epic is impressive but it's not a battle-heavy samurai/period movie. It's a more intimate tale. Kagemusha as a character is really compelling. It's not as dark as I expected from the plot. But it's fascinating to see his subtle acclimation into the role and how it culminates is really strong.
The nightmare sequence is stunning in how vibrant and colorful it is. There's also a magnificent shot early in the movie with a sunset in the background that it insanely striking.
