I went into this movie at a disadvantage because it was right after work and I was already pretty tired. But even if I was operating at 100%, I don't think I would have enjoyed On the Basis of Sex any more. I'm kind of over the pandering, award bait biopic/historical drama that diminishes a cause, an idea, or a figure in an effort to play into a built-in audience's fandom or ideals.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an icon and her accomplishments are staggering. On the Basis of Sex spends so much energy celebrating her as an icon that any drama depicted in this particular story feels out of place.
RBG deserves a better movie that does a better, more honest, job of depicting her rise. On the Basis of Sex isn't it.
