Well, I don't know what I expected. The Emoji Movie is just about as bad as people say. It's such a run of the mill animated movie in the vein of Wreck It Ralph or Inside Out. But, unlike those movies, this is devoid of any meaningful emotional resonance. It tries to tackle some rudimentary themes of finding your place, overcoming shortcomings, and facing your fears. But it doesn't develop any of the themes hardly at all. Instead, The Emoji Movie makes a multitude of cheap, easy puns and constantly references apps and mobile games in a way that makes it seem like the movie thinks it's being clever, but they mostly fall completely flat.
