Inferno ★★★★★

Inferno is Dario Argento's finest piece of architecture, both literally and figuratively. Even though I've seen it several times I never remember the sequence of events in this movie quite right. Each scene is its own perfectly self-contained bit of nightmare/dream logic. The first reel plays like the conclusion to a different film, for instance.

This looks and feels like a Mario Bava film, which isn't an accident. Mario Bava and his son Lamberto Bava collaborated with Argento on Inferno and worked on its visual effects.

Inferno is deeply satisfying in a way I can't fully explain. It's an alchemical evocation of a netherworld full of dark magic.
