Rock of Ages ★★★

As a piece of kitsch and fun this film checks all the boxes, not only does it manage to be funny (occasionally even cleverly so) and deliver the soundtrack you might expect, but Tom Cruise, as always, brings his A-Game as fictional rock-god Stacee Jaxx, making something more than a caricature of a late 80s rocker. Some magnificent cameos, but the other major roles and the story are merely adequate - but then this is not a film that demands an oscar performance or screenplay, and indeed that might be weaker for being overthought. Highly enjoyable, if forgettable, viewing - especially for those of us who know the soundtrack.
