It speaks to this film when the best part of the movie is when Venom makes Tom Hardy eat a bag of frozen tater tots and rotten old chicken from the garbage. The movie is littered with bizarre and hilarious scenes like this where you don't exactly know whether it's intentionally making you laugh or not. Much like an early 2000's comic book movie, Venom is often darkly lit and made to look and feel like something edgier than the source material demands.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie 2017
Given how faithful this is to the source material, this would've really worked a lot better for me when I was 10 years old. Nowadays though, I am really not a fan of the abundance of talkative humor, fourth wall breaking where they directly talk to the audience about what's happening, and the fact that the kids speak and sound like 30 year olds.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2003
And to think Sean Connery thought this was a better choice than Lord of the Rings.
