What a lovely surprise. Even though I’d heard good things, I was still sceptical - remake, Jonah Hill (who I’m sure is lovely in real life but always plays characters I hate), and when comedy fails, it fails hard.
This did not fail. This did not fail at all. This shit was hilarious. I don’t think I’ve laughed so consistently throughout a movie since Anchorman. So: funny? Passed. It was also surprisingly sweet (the best comedies are always “surprisingly sweet”; I don’t know why I continue to be surprised) and Brie Larson is utterly charming in what could have been a very nothing role.
Only issues of note: I still can’t stand Rob Riggle, his face makes me slightly angry whenever I see it, he’s like the anti-Toby Jones (whose face is fascinating, obviously); and dispatching SPOILER REDACTED and SPOILER REDACTED quite so bloodily at the end seemed tonally off with the rest of the film, but otherwise A+, Valedictorian in the class of action comedies featuring Rob Riggle I have seen recently.
