“You know, Leonard Bernstein was one of the great composers and conductors of the 20th century, but sometimes he would be gay. And according to a biography I read of him, when he was holding back the gay part, he did some of his best work.”

absolutely incoherent but probably going to be very rewatchable — the chemistry & tone really worked for the most part even though the edit made it feel like we were only getting every other scene. honestly, the mysterious egg on the ship plot point should’ve just turned into a shot-for-shot remake of ALIEN with kamala’s family and sam jackson.

pleasing world building, visually creative and enriches the OG story but what is with studios and marketing these musicals? do you know what people hate more than a movie musical? a secret movie musical.

though it can lead to confusion and condemnation, scorsese has always trusted us to see the complications of life in his work and feel conflicted.
we think ernest is sympathetic because a normal person would be. but ernest WAS normal. they all are. we take where he lacks in humanity and fill the gaps with our own. a man just like you and me capable and complicit, just like you and me.

there’s something about the dingy charm of 1980s cinema. comedy that doesn’t have to try, just knows that real life is ridiculous. this is a love story.

a tense thriller about a mysterious sociopathic assassin but when let inside you see the darkly hilarious stumbling cycle of a hypocritical, kind of pathetic perfectionist. we are what we are but every second is an opportunity to change. we don’t give a fuck but we actually really do. the killer is just a guy.

this is never going to work if you don’t share my interest in philosophies” all men are the same.
must all girls learn this the hard way? priscilla is a coming of age story that ends with divorce. is it romanticizing the idea? maybe, but it would be dishonest to say that the story is not romantic on the surface, that’s what makes it all the more awful.

i was called out for smiling while watching this but how can you not!! it was a treat to see the director’s cut in a theater, it adds to the claustrophobia especially in the sound design & felt like a whole new experience. i do hope we all know that at the end of the day, feminism could have prevented this.

    Catch Me If You Can

a sneaky spielberg. pretty straightforward on the surface to the point where any director could do a decently similar job — BUT the deep sadness underneath romantic, almost magical, story movement makes for a timeless experience no one else could offer — it’s his signature combo. frank jr has essentially the same origin story and motivations as sammy fabelman down to the burden of passion and elusive mother. (the movie doesn’t work without leo. you can’t make me hate that guy.)
