    'Inside' doesn't matter.

One of the most poignant and unnerving pieces of media from its decade and ostensibly also the funniest. Despite all the #SigmaMale posts, Patrick Bateman is the most pathetic incel on the face of the planet and everybody involved with this film knew so. He's the illogical endpoint of toxic masculinity and capitalism, a soulless entity subsisting on attention and material. He tries to fit in by standing out, constantly dropping names, flexing possessions, and committing heinous…

"The way she is, they're practically a family of dolls- no, perhaps humans and dolls are not so different."
"Humans made dolls in their own image. If God exists, we may be nothing more than dolls to him."

This is a review of both the original 1995-1996 series Neon Genesis Evangelion as well as the 1997 feature film The End of Evangelion. I cannot discuss one without the other, so I will discuss both here. This discussion includes many very…

"My kids were on that beach too."

Coming off The Sugarland Express and especially Duel, Spielberg was a logical choice to helm this, but even so, I doubt anybody could have predicted how monumental Jaws would be. It tops the white-knuckle tension of Duel, its on-screen exhilaration enhanced by off-screen implication, but its real trick is its characters. Like The Sugarland Express, it's a sort of hangout film driven by extraordinary circumstances. Despite how taut it is, every scene imbuing…

Surprisingly bleak for how hokey the presentation is. Their plan is stupid but the storytellers seem acutely aware that freedom isn't actually granted to the condemned when their sentences expire, so their hail-Mary escapades and ultimate downfall are presented with empathy, not as a joke. It's a technical downgrade from Duel and could benefit from shaving some runtime off, but it's good. Spielberg was a promising talent even before Jaws, and if he made this today it could genuinely be one of his best.

I love Letterboxd's diary/review system because it allows me to document my evolving tastes in real-time. I'm not known for having consistent opinions. I originally logged this film as a 4/10, now I think it's a masterpiece. Days ago I did nothing but criticize Wes Anderson, now I've grown to love some of his films. Maybe he grew as a filmmaker between those early works I disliked and the modern day, or maybe I just went through one of my…

There's enough heart packed into every single scene that any single of them included in any 2020s MCU film would make it the best of the era automatically. The best MCU film bar none, and perhaps the best live action superhero film ever made.
