Sentiment mixed with spiky and absurdist humor; Hunt for the Wilderpeople is another really solid directorial outing for the up and coming Taika Waititi. This didn't kill me like What We Do In the Shadows, and I think the film somewhat got away from Waititi in the second half; but there are some really hard truths offered up here. Subjects that are often sanitized to absurd lengths are tackled with honesty and intelligence. Comedy is natural and free-flowing; jokes can pass you by very easily. It's that off-beat sort of Kiwi humor that we get very rarely; well executed and true to it's nature. I highly recommend this, and if you haven't seen it yet watch What We Do In the Shadows as well.
