Figured I may as well usher out 2016 with the year's best film, Manchester by the Sea. Impeccable in really every way, with a legendary turn from Affleck and an unparalleled understanding of grief, loneliness and those transformative processes that dwell in between. Nothing I've seen this year rivals the uncanny authenticity that Lonergan brings to this, how genuinely cathartic this masterpiece is. Affleck's Lee is a real human being with believable shortcomings, strengths and struggles; his journey in Manchester is the stuff of miracles.
Happy New Years, friends.
