Can't get over this movie. Nuanced, elegant performances delivering an insightful, powerful story that is both simple and achingly complex; a revelation in it's mere conception. Yes, it's sad as hell. Yes, I've teared up at each of the four times I've seen this. But the sadness isn't punishing but rather cathartic; honest and authentic enough that it's almost therapeutic. Manchester by the Sea shines a powerful light on the preciousness of things; the significance of tragedy set against the everyday. It's a top tier examination of self-imposed isolation, grief and familial turmoil but also a subtly life-affirming and uplifting film. Certainly one of my favorite films of all time.
