Signs

Signs ★★★★½

A meaningful and earnest attempt to understand the frenzied mindset of an individual in the face of tragedy and crisis; Signs makes the case for confronting such things by embracing our loved ones and believing in something bigger than ourselves. Shyamalan posits that these final moments are the ones that define us; that if we choose to see significance in all things, faith can be a beautiful and empowering thing. This is the perfect marriage of Shyamalan's hopefulness with his talent for suspense; all the alien and thriller elements take a secondary (though still influential) role to the central drama of a small family dealing with loss. Beautiful in all ways, and a passionate exploration of faith and family cleverly laid within a thrilling alien invasion premise. Really good stuff. My favorite Shyamalan.
