Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ★★★★

When I watched it as a child, few films I can remember freaked me out quite as much as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and even watching it now, it's hard to believe how it was able to get away with a PG rating but at the same time, this is also a rousing action-adventure film and a terrific sequel to one of the greatest films ever. Certainly, Temple of Doom isn't nearly as great in my opinion as Raiders of the Lost Ark but despite being so, this is nevertheless a pretty awesome sequel especially when it comes to the action. The final fourty minutes of this film is practically an entire extended set piece and so many of the action sequences here are just as good as the first one's, which is why this is such a good follow-up in that it retains the first's breakneck pace and splendid action.

When it comes to the writing however, there is a noticeable step down as the story isn't nearly as tight and the dialogue not as sharp (the humour in particular doesn't always work though there are plenty of funny moments) but it makes up for that with the excellent cast led again by a flawless Harrison Ford. Ke Huy Quan is also so great as Short Round and pretty much every other element, such as Steven Spielberg's direction, John Williams' music, and the special effects, are all aces again, helping to make Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom a top-quality sequel that just isn't quite as good as the original for me. Still really enjoyed revisiting it after so long though, especially since I was finally able to watch it this time without covering my eyes like I did when I was little.
