This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

"this time be realistic, like in a movie."

i think i need to have another bong-joon-ho-a-thon, since it's been a real hot minute since i saw his movies and i need all that wackiness back in my life before parasite comes out (though my memory might be failing me, but this feels notably more subdued compared to his other stuff).

inherits the strange comedy of other bong joon ho movies and amplifies it to make a charming, fun, and heartbreaking movie. all the characters are lovable/love-to-hateable in their own way, (mija is a wonderful protagonist) and the story's wacky nature adds more to the film's charisma than it detracts from any sort of logic. the corporate/activism plot doesn't hit the moral quite as powerfully as, say, snowpiercer, but its message still comes through resonantly; i kept wishing this was a kid's movie, but i know i wouldn't want to soften the ending's blow. i'm going to pet my dog and go to sleep now
