this is an ascended nicolas cage movie. i think every movie (especially ones that take themselves seriously) are unable to escape his presence. i think nic cage is designed to be a cheesy '80s slasher movie actor and cosmatos manages to fully utilize him to the best of his abilities.

as someone from winnipeg, this movie really struck the heart. having known about this film for a while and having it described as “really weird”, i was surprised by how easily i got into it. the landmarks, very close to where i live, were there. from the first few frames, i was nostalgic despite never being aluve in the 1920s. the fact and fiction felt too true to the mythos of winnipeg.
