Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

    ★★★

A surprisingly good time for someone like me, meaning someone who’s not really into slasher movies. It feels pretty tame for an R-rated movie (the sex scene is laughably PG-13 and other than someone getting impaled by a shotgun, the kills are either tame or happen off-screen) but there are two things that I really liked:

    1) Unlike most horror movies, the threat is taken seriously right away. There’s no time wasted with having the town and authorities thinking Loomis…

ACTING: An evening with Tom Hardy, featuring Tom Hardy and his car.

    Perfect length.

It’s not you, movie. It’s me. I just can’t take the kind of stuff that happens in your second half as seriously as you need me to.

Well, maybe it’s a little you, movie. Because your first half is a heart-wrenching portrayal of grief and tragedy and you let me down with the follow-up. And Toni Collette gives her all for over two hours and I kind of resent the silliness you put her through during the third act.

An extra half a star for what might be the most HOLY SHIT moment of 2018.

It gets the little Letterboxd heart thanks to a post-credits bit that had me (surprisingly) geeking out like when Sam Jackson showed up at the end of the first IRON MAN. Oh, the possibilities, especially if they integrate this into the rest of the MCU. And if they get their shit together and actually make a decent movie next time.

This time, however, it’s mostly a ridiculous mess that would’ve been underwhelming even if UPGRADE hadn’t already taken the wind…
