You're sixteen and the hero of your story. At sixteen, you haven't quite figured out that each and everyone of us is the hero of our own story.

Here's sixteen-year-old, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) and she's an intelligent, bright, university-bound student who also loves French films and jazz and art and classical music. One rainy day, an older man named David (Peter Sarsgaard) pulls his car up alongside her and offers to give her cello a lift because of course, she…

How have I not seen this film before? How?

Cléo (Corinne Marchand) is waiting on cancer biopsy test results. For two consecutive hours, she waits.

I have been in this position, albeit not for cancer. I have been stuck waiting for the scary test results where your options are probably at best, something that is going to put you through hell and turn your life upside down for an indefinite period of time or at worst, will kill you. And…

Underwhelming and skimpy adaptation of a one-act play. It's got all the standard southern gothic trademarks, but there's not much meat on this one. I don't know if it's the writing or the directing or the casting (the only one here who seems at all comfortable with their part is Kate Reid), but it's sloppy and confused, and not in a good way.

There are other, better films out there. Go watch them.

Ah, the Vincent Price of my childhood. Not that I was around in 1953, but old reruns of Vincent Price's horror films from the 1950s and 60s were. Depending on how much he cared, there would be Vincent Price embracing the absurdity of it all.

Price is only mildly hammy in House of Wax. It's okay. The part calls for it. He's playing one of those characters who already have a screw or five loose before "the incident" that turns him beyond the pale. There are some adequate second/third tier actors playing the remaining characters. The whole thing is absurd, but it's fun, and that's okay.

It's a not uncommon habit of mine to watch a movie before bedtime. Usually, this relaxes me and I have an easier time falling asleep. Not last night. No, last night, I was wide awake trying to figure out what the many problems with Being the Ricardos were.

I think I can distill it down to three:

    1. The digital enhancement of Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem to look like their characters of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. It's distractingly…

Maybe even better than the first one? Story feels a little more taut. I loved the nostalgia/collector angle a lot. The only thing I could have done without was the male gazey bit with the Barbies.
