Boogie Nights 1997
Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, Melora Walters, Alfred Molina…..the list goes on, but these beautiful actors really stood out, at least in our eyes.
Mark Wahlberg has a scene late in the film with the camera holding on his face, and we see everything that goes through his mind, and it is astonishing. Will never know how he did that.
Great movie, though we agree with the great Roger Ebert who said that Paul Thomas Anderson really “surpassed himself” with his next film, Magnolia.
Very sad, depressing film with incredible filmmaking and some otherworldly acting.

Don Jon 2013
Julianne Moore can turn chicken shit into chicken salad. Not sure if it’s that Moore elevated the entire last half hour PLUS the material got better, or if Moore simply elevated the material (the last act is when her character really comes into play). The first hour was an abomination. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a strange director, and an even stranger writer. Movie really did a 180 in the final third, and it actually felt kinda earned.

Endlessly fascinating, intriguing, uneasy, and brilliant. Benedict Cumberbatch has never been better, and Jane Campion is a master. Everyone is wonderful in it, not least of whom being the criminally undersung Kirsten Dunst, getting the attention for this film that she’s deserved all the way back since 1994’s Interview with the Vampire. The first half—though engaging—requires some patience, though it all pays off and rewards you. Fascinating story with excellent storytelling.

Gone Girl 2014
As stated last entry, we rewatched right away with commentary—LOVED it.
If you love this film, you must experience it with director commentary at some point.
David Fincher is clear-eyed and brilliant, assembled the most brilliant team to make the most brilliant film. He is candid, at times laugh-out-loud hilarious, and deeply appreciative. He loves what he does. You will learn LOTS. As is the case with his films, he shows such astuteness, observation, and admiration for even the smallest…
