Understandable criticism, but I loved it all the same. One of the cheapest aspects of the stage-to-screen adaptation was Usnavi's storytelling/narration. Surely there could have been a better way to show that on film other than essentially lying to the audience. I could see it working with a set on stage, but here it was just a cheap fake-out device.
