While I still stand by my initial opinion including unnecessarily abstract editing and overall repetitive story structure, this film has two redeeming qualities— one old and one new. The performances are all around outstanding which I originally praised, but for some strange reason I didn’t notice its immaculate cinematography in the theatre. There are dozens of static shots and sequences that are not only genuinely gorgeous but in addition provide legitimate emotional value.
It’s a shame Beautiful Boy contains the flaws it does, because this could have almost been a classic. But there are enough redeeming qualities here to give it a watch.
And yeah, you’re gonna cry unless you’re made of stone.
