Parker Brennon 🎬’s review published on Letterboxd:
I feel so alone. Out of the 57 people I follow who have watched this, only *four* gave the same rating (or higher) as me. Obviously, the dislike for this movie isn't a mere gender issue — I see low ratings across the board. I've read plenty of negative reviews too, but Letterboxd folks are being weirdly vague about why they hate this movie. Luckily, I went to see it with a group, so I was able to hear specific reasons why this story isn't working for people.
For me, tonight's viewing was both fun and refreshing. Until now, my go-to feminist slasher was The Slumber Party Massacre (1982). I'm happy to move this new Black Christmas to the top spot. A bit of over-explaining aside, I wasn't bothered at all by the screenplay. It's a PG-13 slasher, with a supernatural twist. Everything I expected (and hoped for) made its way to screen. It seems fitting that this story world becomes such a heightened reality, especially towards the end. Maybe someday, folks will enjoy this reimagining more. Don't worry, the original Black Christmas isn't going anywhere. I love that movie too. Total classic.
