Okay, so this is basically Grand Theft Auto: The Movie in so many ways. But it's so full of Edgar Wright's elegant, subtle, often hilarious touches that it becomes so much more than that. The production values are high, and the attention to detail is meticulous. The use of music throughout is, of course, a masterstroke - and the gimmick of beat-matching visual gestures to the soundtrack never strays into being overdone.
Maybe I don't watch enough action films, or perhaps it's just that Edgar Wright knows how to push my buttons (and has done ever since Spaced), but this film had me repeatedly groaning with joy right from the opening scene to the very end.
