Palm Springs 2020
Inspired mix of Groundhog Day and The Good Place, in its best moments this touches Kaufmann-esque greatness.

Cyrano de Bergerac 1990
Vague half-memories of seeing bits of this before, but this was my first proper attentive watch. And it's great! The first 90 minutes zips along like magic, and despite a big lull in the war section, the end is really something. Classic death scene of the highest order.

Not Another Happy Ending 2013
"Sometimes love needs a rewrite" says the tagline. So do some movies, and this is one of them.

C'mon C'mon 2021
There's a tough balance to strike with this kind of emotional, sensitive drama. Too much overstatement can really kill any subtlety, which leads to triteness that rings hollow. But Mike Mills plays it just right - touching on parenthood, grief, marriage, sibling relationships and more with lightness and specificity. It really pierced my heart, with moments that resonated with my own experience of living life. It's all centred on - and depends on - Joaquin Phoenix at his best; crumpled and beautifully human.
