Takeshi Kitano is without doubt one of the best modern Japanese film directors and actors. 'Kikujiro' is so wonderful and so typical of Kitano, even when people expect him to revert to violence yet he opts for the exact opposite despite centring his film on someone who could easily be apart of a more violent world. Filled with touching and genuinely emotional moments helped by a believable central relationship, a blissful Joe Hisaishi score and more laughs than most modern comedies put together, 'Kikujiro' is a testament to Kitano's diverse career. It is the kind of film I could watch over and over again and be filled with such beaming happiness. Films like that should be treasured forever!
