Still holds up well after all these years. Smart and funny.

The actors are riveting, the cinematography excellent and the story, necessarily contrived, exists to expose the depth of emotions and the struggle to remain "human" and pacifist under the pressures and aggression of war. The brief scene of actual warfare was very well done with the first explosion arriving with a shocking jolt.

Almost experimental. Great soundtrack. Moody as hell. Tracking shots like those of Birth. Reminds me of Roeg's "The Man Who Fell to Earth" in that the film is experienced through the eyes of the alien. Not much is explained. I like the mystery.

This is one film that did not appeal to me in the least. I was not even particularly impressed by the cinematography. I won't criticize this one because my feelings about it are obviously biased.
