Wow. What a fantastic experience. Simply brilliant. This is just one of those films that manages to, for lack of a better word, hypnotise you as the madness unfurls.
It begins with a superb, heart wrenching prologue, with an incredibly powerful performance by Pugh that only gets better as the film continues. Yet as the camera slowly zooms into the snowstorm and the title appears in oxymoronic fashion, you know this is going to be one hell of a ride.
Though the culty stuff all starts off as fun, morbid humour - much to the hilariously shocked reactions of our protagonists - it doesn't take long before the comedy turns into nauseating, disturbing horror, full of understated details (like the flowers seemingly breathing) that make you question your own reality, and an atmosphere that subtly builds to a roaring crescendo, ending with a terrifying, villainous and depressing - yet equally satisfying - smile.
I give this film an A4+
