Letterboxd — Your life in film

This is a very good movie, although I admit I ran into the same problem I had watching it the first time -- almost everything I adore in this would later be done in far stranger and better ways with Argento's Inferno.

Russell Crowe & Austin P. McKenzie are the defining screen couple of the decade.

Sake is wonderful.

Alcazar is so much stranger and more interesting than basically every contemporary filmmaker he can be compared to.

Loved the winter street scene in the opening and the wooden boat rocking on dark water. Wish there was more mermaid.

Easiest DNF of the year

It's provocative, it gets the people going.

Way more of a 70s paranoia riff than I expected (including a bizarre Long Goodbye homage)

3 star classic.

Captures de Ghelderode's aesthetic well - puppets, dummies, masks, mills, Ensor - but lacks the anguish and awe he instills in them. Owes an unmistakable debt to Švankmajer's take on Walpole.
