Bimbo's Initiation ★★★★★

I grew up reading Jim Woodring's Frank comics, which severely warped my mind and forever made its mark on me. It's fascinating to see the animation that warped Woodring's mind. Bimbo's Initiation has the same feverish quality that would appear in Woodring's work. It's unbelievably dark with constant, sickening, surreal imagery. In its short six minutes, it spins into stranger and stranger territory, each sequence more mind-melting than the one before it. The thing I find most compelling about the Fleischer cartoons is that the imagery seems to come from nowhere, no place we could ever connect to. A skeleton cracking a pun, masked creeps with candles on their heads, a knife with a face. Just to add a cherry on top to its insanity, Bimbo's torture is basically the doing of Mickey Mouse who makes a cameo at the beginning of the short.
