The thing that really stood out to me in this film was the screenplay- absolutely rich in every aspect, it showed immense depth and nuance to all of the characters, the comedic satire, the foreshadowing, symbolism, themes, social commentary, etc. This film is paced in a sense where you cannot leave your seat or take your eyes away from it. The ending of this film is both heartbreaking yet real, and Joon-ho lends no emotional cushions there.
Also the way…
Masterful in every sense- from the direction to the lighting to the framing, acting, dialogue, homages, etc- a truly realized film at that.
Every second feels purposeful and not wasted, and it's an absolutely fun film to watch too. Defoe and Pattinson both try out do each other for performance of the year, and their chemistry is magnificent. Not gonna get too much deeper than that, but it's easily my fav of the year so far.
