"Disease is not just an illness, it is an experience."

A slowly growing, curated list of movies about the experience of illness or significantly feature the effects sickness has on families, communities, or society. Includes both films with overt disease states and ones that imply illness subtly/metaphorically. In addition, films that include narratives of medically marginalized folks. I've also decided to include films that tell narratives surrounding social determinants of health (like poverty, education, and crime).

In summary, these are the movies that I've watched or want to watch to become a more compassionate physician.

Suggestions are welcome!

*notes list the illness, disease, etc. that relates to the film. They may be spoilers in and of themselves, especially if the disease is central to the plot twist of the film.…
