Elle ★★★★

This one kept me guessing in all the best ways by subverting victimhood, femininity, family and (gasp!) video games. What initially struck me as an exploitative French rape fantasy for intellectuals gave way to a more self-aware critique of rape culture in which every scene's multiple layers reminded me of why I keep coming back to Verhoeven's work. Huppert delights as a woman that masterfully faces all of the idiot monsters that surround her head on--I think I'll laugh every time I think of her cavalier attitude towards parallel parking.
