Great first half. The second half—ironically the half on the “night train”—is not as compelling, mainly due to an excess of comic relief from the Caldicott and Charters characters. Yet it is overall quite enjoyable with a tense, well-staged finale.

Kansas City Confidential 1952
Fun film. The plot has a few too many gaping holes for me to consider it more than just ok overall. The performances were generally good, but Preston Foster was easily the highlight.

Animal Crackers 1930
Perhaps my favorite Marx Brothers film so far. Maybe. (It’s been years since I’ve seen Duck Soup, the other contender — memory fades.) Margaret Dumont and Lillian Roth were great as well — and both adorable.

Strictly Dishonorable 1931
This is fun and entertaining, as I would have expected from anything based on a Preston Sturges hit play. Lewis Stone is a revelation as a comic, amiable drunk “judge”—an alternate universe Judge Hardy.
