thought this would be some meta thing and it's actually just a rouch styled ethnography in the current age which is cool ig but not exactly what i was hoping for

lanthimos has gone from the arthouse to the popcorn arthouse to the faux-arthouse. nothing of note here; it's an entertainingly forgettable oscar bait from someone who probably fantasized about telling the academy off not ten years ago. this guy was never hugely somebody who showed promise to me (i wouldn't have believed you if you said the Dogtooth director would go on to have this stature) but here we are, laughing at bourgeois lifestyles like the petit-bourgeois we are.

some segments are genuinely enthralling (the stalin question) and the concept is fun but my mind was just not having this tonight for some reason

unlike the films that are actually complete shit that people say "are just super decent and nothing else" this one is actually fr just super decent and nothing else. forgettablekino.

tried this again w the boys and i just do not vibe with so many things going on here, specifically the setting and the romance. i feel like mann can excel with stuff like this but here he's just doing great shootouts and kinda bad everything else, so it balances out here.

kinda agree with cmurph here; something that originally seemed to be incredible has no real cohesion even though i can tell that it's telling a narrative. stuff like this makes me appreciate fellini more because he was always able to do this messy sort of cinema so well in his later work.
