    I Am Wrath

    ★★

There's some TV news footage at the start of this film that includes the word GNAGS instead of GANGS. That sloppiness doesn't bode well for what's to come...and actually sums up the film pretty well. It's yet another attempt to cash in on Taken, with John Travolta taking on the avenger role. But you spend most of the film wondering: what happened to Travolta? He looks completely bored (he's not the only one...) - and where did his charisma go?…

  • Europa Report

    Europa Report

    ★★

Six astronauts head to one of Jupiter's moons to see if there's life on Europa. It doesn't take much to work out things won't go to plan. A variation on the found footage genre, most of the action is filmed on the spaceship's cameras. But nothing really happens for 50 minutes, and instead of building tension, it induces boredom. The last half hour crams in all the action/deaths, but it's a bit late to regain your interest by then.

    Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

    ★★★★½

Frances McDormand is magnificent in the compelling Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and deserves every plaudit and accolade she gets. She gives an absolutely stunning portrayal of a mother full of grief, remorse, anger, violence, persistence, single-mindedness. You can't take your eyes off her when she's on screen, and even when the character is making bad decisions, you understand her and will her to get the justice she seeks. There's terrific support from Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson and, in…

  • Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

    Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

    ★★½

Disappointing sequel, which struggles to match the original now everyone is out of the maze. It's got some good action sequences - although these do all tend to be 'we must run away from this group that are chasing us'. But the story doesn't hold the attention - it is very episodic and it gives us almost no more answers as to what is going on than the first film managed. It certainly doesn't come close to explaining the point of the maze. At two hours, it's far too long.
