At first I thought this was just an alright western but it goes onto becoming something else, something more substantial but not as straightforward as one would expect a typical American western to be. It's very dark right off the bat it sets a tone with the despicable protagonist who kills and rapes without a second thought, his past is never dived completely into it's left very open ended and up to the viewer's interpretation. Why he is the way…
I don't get why so many animes are on letterboxd all of the sudden but fuck it. I watched this after the 2003 version which I thought I'd like more cause I was very young and edgy hell I used to have the Tokyo ghoul's opening theme on repeat, yet I pretty much abhorred the edginess of 03 version. This on the other hand is amazing on all counts, fantastic blend of humor and quality animation with some very strong storytelling that never loses it's charm. Pretty much a must watch.
Good score, very good performance by Joaquin, marvelous cinematography, neat ideas here and there but overall nah didn't quite care for this that end would have benefited without that reference nonetheless not a completely bad experience but not as good as many folks made it seem but to each their own.
